Hi, I'm a high school student doing a research project for a prestigious competition and I would REALLY appreciate your help by completing my survey.

My eight year old cousin has autism, and autism is therefore very near and dear to me. I wanted my research project to incorporate autism because I am hoping my results can eventually be beneficial to families.

I would REALLY appreciate if you could go to the following link:

Hi all

I am reading this book now, it's an autobiograpy by John Elder Robison. His brother wrote "Running With Scissors" which I think I may read next. He apparently wrote about his brother's Aspergers and he had so much response about Aspergers he encouraged his brother to write his own story.

I'm finding it interesting and familiar in parts.

Your local library may have it. If anyone would like to borrow my copy after me, let me know. I see no value in books sitting on a shelf ...

Hi all

Wanted to start this thread as I know there are several people already using GF CF diets for their family member with Autism. And others who are interested in finding out more or trialing it.

Some research and many families who have trailed a GF and/or casein free diet has witnessed improvements in Autism symptoms - such as behaviours, continence, concentration, speech, skin issues, sleep, etc. Not all individuals improve, and not all individuals improve at the same level as others. ...

Hi everyone

I've been asked about toe walking in individuals with Autism. Both my boys did but at almost 13 and 9 now, neither have done it for years and years. Neither of them had treatment but I do recall one boy who had to wear hard soled shoes and sandals all the time and had physio and OT with his feet. Don't know what the outcome was.

Anyone else had other treatments??

Thanks

My DS is 10 years old and has aspergers. He is a terrific boy, but he just doesn't get the need to help around the home.
HI everyone

I've added this in the hope people will start to talk.

I feel like I am almost talking to myself.

I'm happy to keep adding information but that's not the aim of a FORUM. The aim of a forum is that members will talk to each other about issues and events not just be informed.

Perhaps nearly everyone is "shy"?? I don't think so.

I tend to ignore the little stuff, but he has had a project to do this term, he was given it in week 1 and it is due in week 8 so lots of time, I have broken it down into little bits, first off I made a research sheet, then I also created paragraph guides etc. He has done nothing. He walks around with a big yellow bubble in his nose, and then when we do convince him to blow, he blows once or twice and thinks he's solved the problem. He doesn't get blowing until his nose is clear. The kids at school tell him to blow his nose, we do it at home. Well, I can't believe School Holidays are only 4 weeks away and this obvioulsy means it's time to start thinking of what we will be doing.

What do you do on school holidays with your kids?

Our older boy (who's nearly 13yrs) did a holiday program 2 days a week for the last three weeks of the Christmas Holidays - with Explore Traveller specifically for individuals with an intellectual disability. http://tinyurl.com/dhnev8 I was terrified as we had never had him in a holiday ...

Hi

I'm Jenny, mum of 4, girl 14, boy 10, girl 7 and boy 21months. Our second child has AS, which was finally diagnosed at 8. Far too late for early intervention, and in fact too late for any government assistance in our small town. So we regularly traipse to Perth to see our speechie or to see the psych, or any other treatment. The only treatment we can access here is physio, which is actually quite useful as he has some strange postural things going at the moment.

Hi all

Just wanted to start a thread about mainstream vs. Education Support facilities.

Our boys both have autism.

The older one is more severely affected and possibly also has an intellectual delay. We built our house about 2 years before #1 came along and about 4 years before he was diagnosed but we managed to pick a suburb that had an education support centre on the same school site as the primary school - luck I guess!! He has been in the Education Support Centre since year ...

WANDA

WANDA was created in June of 2008 from the imaginings of a band of people bought together from various walks of life for a Developing Active Citizens course.

The overall objective of Developing Active Citizens was ‘to increase the capacity of people with a disability to take up leadership roles within their community’.

The success of this 12months course had such a impact on the participants that WANDA was born to extend the success to other members of the community

This is Wendy Lawson's Webpage.

She describes herself as being autistic. She has written books and frequently speaks around Australia and now many presentations have been put online about her own and other's expereices of living with Autism. Wendy is a terrific presenter and I have to admit to having had many "ah ha" moments while listening to her and reading her books.

Autism Assistance Dogs

Hi all

I am reading the book "A Friend Like Henry" - it's about a family with a little boy called Dale and to cut a long story short, he gets a puppy which he calls Henry. It's a true story. Having the dog helps the family "teach" Dale lots of things.

This led me to look for info about dogs for kids with Autism....and I found this beautiful site. I'm still looking but decided to share it with you straight away.
