Puberty challenges to Prepare for Empty

Have a six year old girl nonverbal and severely autistic, would like to hear from other parents in how they manage menstruation and prepare their daughter. What options do I have if in the future she won't cope with all the
drama eg crampingetc. Regards Teresa Very Happy Very Happy

Hi Teresa

Another mum I know wrote a book for her daughter with autism using the computer, photos etc, describing what she wanted her to know. A social story of sorts. If you like I could ask her if she might chat with you about it.

I have both of mine are boys, so no menstruation issues here but dreading the boys stuff just the same. Thirteen year old has the hair, deeper voice but nothing "else" happening yet!!

cheers

Hi Teresa
Apart from using a social story to let your daughter know what's happening you might also like to talk to your doctor about contraceptive methods used to control menstruation symptoms. Many women have IUDs or implantable contaceptives that reduce or even completely stop menstrual flow, if you feel this is going to be the biggest issue. It's also important to discuss contraception with your doctor.
We have two boys on the spectrum so we are dealing with different issues all together.
